Nigerian Army Begins Recruitment To Fight Against Insurgency

Abuja – The Nigerian Army (NA) on Wednesday said it had commenced recruitment of qualified able men into the service to beef up its strength in the ongoing war against insurgency. The Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Olajide Laleye, made the disclosure at a news conference in Abuja. He said “those recruited will be trained, after which they will form part of the force to undertake campaign in the North-East. “In the same vein, the Nigerian Army will also commission duly qualified interested Nigerians as officers through the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) and Short Service Commission. “Already, the office of the Military Secretary has sent out adverts in some national dailies for interested candidates.’’ Lalaye decried sections of the media for undertaking a smear campaign calculated to undermine the numerous achievements of the army. He said that in spite of the efforts of the NA to tackle the insecurity problem in the country, some individuals, bodies and organisations were working toward tarnishing its image. He added that “this group and their international collaborators are trying hard to portray the Nigerian military as corrupt with myriad of problems and challenges ranging from morale of troops, equipment and troops welfare. “However, the army as one of the binding forces of the unity of Nigeria is far from being weak and ineffective.’’ Commenting on the recent mutiny by soldiers in Borno, the director said “isolated cases, which normally occur during operations such as the one in the North East should not be taken as the norm.’’ He said that the army had performed creditably well in all operations assigned to it and it recorded outstanding performances in peacekeeping and internal security operations.’’ Layele said that the army was steadily reversing the ugly menace of terrorism and insurgency in parts of the country. He added that troops’ allowances had always been paid when due, including allowances for the month of May 2014. The spokesman insisted that if there were factual cases of corruption against the army, such reports should be made available to the authorities. (NAN)

US troops deploy to Chad in hunt for Nigerian girls

Washington: The United States has deployed 80 military personnel to Chad to help regional efforts to rescue more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in neighboring Nigeria, President Barack Obama said Wednesday. "These personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area," he said in a letter to Congress. "The force will remain in Chad until its support in resolving the kidnapping situation is no longer required." Last month, Islamist militants from the Boko Haram extremist group seized more than 200 Nigerian girls from school dormitories in the northeastern community of Chibok, near border with Chad. Nigerian and international authorities were slow to react but, after concerned citizens launched social media campaign and the group threatened to sell the girls into slavery, offers of help have multiplied. France also has forces in Chad, and Britain and the United States have sent small teams of specialists to Nigeria to assist President Goodluck Jonathan's government in the search for the girls. Meanwhile, the violence has continued, with attacks on villages attributed to Boko Haram leaving scores dead and a bomb attack on the Nigerian city of Jos killing at least 118 people Tuesday.

Ice Prince Questions President Jonathan Over Plateau Bombings

Various celebrities may have shown their care about the abducted girls in various ways, but one person that is angry about the whole situation is Chocolate City rap star, Ice Prince Zamani. The artiste has questioned President Goodluck Jonathan on what his intentions are on the current bombing in some part of the northern states in Nigeria, especially in Jos, Plateau State, Ice Prince's home state, where two explosions reportedly killed over 100 persons. Ice Prince, who is believed to be one of the President’s favourite artiste, having received an award in 2013 along with his colleague, M.I Abaga as NASCOM Rhythm & Play Ambassadors, from the Federal Government, is now angry with the President’s perceived slow pace to curtail the activities of insurgents in the country.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk strip for Vogue Spain cover in Mario Testino photo shoot

Here are the models who make up Vogue cover: a soccer superstar, a Russian supermodel and an iconic Peruvian celebrity photographer. Reminiscent of the recent Kim and Kanye cover, Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk have posed for celebrity photographer Mario Testino in a variety of loved-up scenes for the June 2014 issue. For the Spanish Vogue cover, the stunning Shayk shields her footballer lover’s modesty with her white strapless gown. With bodies like that, this celebrity couple have little reason to cover up and Testino is taking full advantage.
With the cover lines ‘Amor and Futbol’, which translates to ‘Love and Football’ the soon-to-be-married duo show off their stunning bods in some risque positions. “The most surprising thing will be the cover: to have Cristiano and Irina together with a spectacular photo with the energy and magic of Mario Testino.
“That light and colour and that relationship — because Mario knows how to pretty much capture the soul of those he photographs,” Yolanda Sacristan, the director of Vogue Spain, says in a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot.
With the Kim and Kanye cover breaking sales records for the magazine it’s clear that this wont be the last celeb couple to pose-up in steamy positions for the cover — and it’s certainly not the first.
