“I killed my wife because she gave me HIV” – Suspect

A man identified as Mr. Philip Katongu., who hails from Nasarawa state, has been arrested by the operatives of the Department of Criminal Investigations, Yaba, Lagos for stabbing his wife to death.

According to reports, his late wife Justina was stabbed in three places in their home at Oniru Estate, Maroko, Lagos.

In his statement to the police, Katongu explained that his reason for killing his wife was because she had infected him with HIV. He revealed that he tried to commit suicide after killing his wife, but neighbours forced their way in and immediately rushed him to the nearest hospital.

“I married Justina, in December 2010. I later learnt that she had given birth to two girls for a man. The girls died of AIDS.

“However, when we first met, she did not tell me all these. I explained to her that I have a wife with children and I wanted to marry her too. Before marriage, I told her we should go to hospital to conduct HIV test, but she refused and said that she was HIV negative. So we started sleeping together.”

“I was angry and told the doctor who equally blamed her for not disclosing it to me. The doctor then tested me, and I was positive. We came back to Lagos and continued with the relationship because I loved her. But suddenly, she told me she wanted to pack out from my house that she was no longer interested in marrying me having had another person in Abuja. In fact, the man usually called her on phone while we were together.” he disclosed

“I told her that with her status, she should not go and be infecting people with the virus. And that I will kill her and kill myself. We started fighting and I stabbed her. It was in the early hours. I stabbed her three times with a knife. She shouted and people were knocking at our door.

After she died, I stabbed myself, and the people broke the door open. I woke up to find myself in a hospital. I feel very bad that I killed my wife. I loved her very much.”

BREAKING: Northern Elders give Jonathan October deadline to end Boko Haram insurgency, produce Chibok girls

The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, on Monday identified “lack of a strong will at the level of the presidency, deep-seated corruption, incompetence in governments and in the management of security challenges” as major factors fuelling the Boko Haram insurgency.

The body also advised President Goodluck Jonathan to bring an end the insurgency in all its manifestations and produce the Chibok girls before the end of October, 2014, saying In the event that he failed to do so, Nigerians would be left with the only conclusion that he had forfieted his right to ask for their mandate beyond 2015.

In a communique issued at a press conference in Kaduna, NEF said after a major review of the state of the nation, it resolved to continue to offer ways to resolve the country’s current political, economic, security challenges, and also facilitate the emergence of a more united, secure and prosperous nation out of its present limitations.

The statement obtained by DailyPost was signed by Barrister Solomon Dalung and Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, OON, both NEF prominent members.

It reads: “The security situation in our nation today represents the most serious threat to our individual and collective lives in our entire history. The reality is that the threats posed by what appears to be an insurgency that has many manifestations and defies a clear and consistent identity is growing due to the absence of a clear national consensus over its nature, and it solutions.

“The lack of a strong will at the level of the presidency to fight it, as well as deep-seated corruption and incompetence in governments and in the management of our security challenges has allowed a band of terrorists to take and hold vast parts of our land and populations hostage, while every citizen lives in fear that they will be its next victim.

“The Northern Elders Forum does not believe that the Nigerian military cannot defeat these terrorists. We also reject the notion that multiple internal security challenges such as attacks on villages, ethno-religions conflicts and banditry springing up by the dayin many parts of the north are all a coincidence. Indeed, we are convinced that most of these conflicts are being engineered to weaken the North politically and economically by interests which intend to exploit such weaknesses for electoral benefits.

“In the light of our firm conviction that the insurgency and related security challenges pose threats to the 2015 elections and the survival of our nation, we strongly advise President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to bring an end to the insurgency in all its manifestations and produce the Chibok girls before the end of October, 2014.The circumstances under which our fellow citizens in and around Gwoza in Borno state in particular live and die will not be tolerated by any people who have a government and a leader sworn to defend them, and they must be reversed immediately. In the event that President Jonathan fails to do this, Nigerians will be left with the only conclusion that he has forfieted his right to ask for our mandate beyond 2015″.

They added that, “The Northern Elders Forum calls on the President to immediately set up a Judicial Panel to investigate the recent killing of over 30 members of the Islamic Movement in Zaria. The internal investigations by the military in an event in which soldiers are involved will not meet the minimum standards of fairness and acceptability. The Forum reminds the nation that it was the murder of Muhammad Yusuf by the Nigeria Police in 2009 that formed the major point of escalation in the activities of the group(s) known today under the generic term of Boko Haram. We also call for a thorough investigation into the attempted assassination of General Muhammadu Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, and the publication of the outcome of these investigations.

“The Forum notes that the state of security and economic challenges of the North are deteriorating, in spite of its wealth of leaders and elders who should use their God-given privileges, power and influence to affect a reversal of these dangerous trends. It is no secret that the vast majority of Northerners lament their marginalization, insecurity and poverty, and blame it in large part on the inability of unwillingness of its past and present leaders to utilize all access to power which they enjoy, to bring us redress and relief. General Yakubu Gowon, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, General Abdussalami Abubakar, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Architect Namadi Sambo, General T.Y Danjuma and all retired Chief Justices of Nigeria from the North represent grossly under-utilized assets of the North.

“The N.E.F joins millions of Northerners in appealing to these leaders to raise their levels of involvement in the fortunes of our region in every endeavour or fora they are involved. In these difficult days when every hand must be on deck, if these leaders cannot visibly help to transform the fortunes of the North in the next few months, they will leave northerners with the damaging impression that they have abandoned the region and the people to its seemingly irreversible decline and ultimate destruction.

“The Forum took stock of the performance of northerners at the National Conference, and commends the commitment of the vast majority of the delegates to the core interests of the north and the unity and survival of our nation on principles of equity and mutual respect. The N.E.F appeals to all leaders from other parts of the country to discourage tendencies which suggest that some parts of our federation are dispensable and undeserving of respect.

“The Forum has noted with relief the cessation of plans to single out northerners in many parts of the country for treatments which humiliate them and deprive them of their rights to live and work in any part of Nigeria. While commending the maturity and foresight of northern leaders which informed the restraints against retaliatory and other negative measures, the Forum appeals to young persons from the north to resist the temptation to operate by the very low standards of responsibility set by others. These young northerners should be reminded that their legacy includes the heroic efforts of their forebears to build and sustain this nation to its present state, and they did this in the face of massive provocations and threats. The Forum places on record its appreciation for the prompt response of President Goodluck Jonathan to appeals for decisive action against profiling and other threatening actions against northerners in some states in the southern parts of the country.

“The Forum invites attention of Nigerians to the critical role which the 2015 elections will play in the future of our nation. We call on all leaders and political parties to demonstrate the highest levels of commitment to the rule of law and the demands of the electoral process. At all cost, the 2015 elections must be free and fair. This means that any threat which may provide a cover for militarising the electoral process must be eliminated before the elections. Every part of Nigeria must participate in these elections, and no citizen should be deprived of his right to vote under any excuse.

“The Forum is concerned that political developments in some states which involve removals, threats or attempts to remove elected persons are being informed by partisan interests seeking advantages towards 2015. These are dangerous antics which will deepen violence and other acts of desperation by politicians. The Forum urges the convening of a genuine summit of political leaders and parties to create or reinforce consensus around the imperatives of security of the electoral process, and ensuring that 2015 elections are spared from widespread disputes”.

Spanish priest with Ebola treated with experimental serum, Zmapp

The 75 year old Spanish priest who was infected with the Ebola virus in Liberia is being treated with the new experimental drug, Zmapp, which was used to treat two US missionary doctors infected with the virus.

The Spanish government claimed yesterday that the drug was imported from Geneva and doctors have begun to administer it on Fr. Miguel Pajares at Madrid’s La Paz-Carlos III hospital where he is in isolation.

The first person to be treated with the serum, Dr. Kent Brantly, saw his condition improve after being given Zmapp.

Since his treatment began, Fr. Pajares is said to be in stable condition, no longer has fever, and hasn’t any hemorrhaging. Doctors believe that his condition will greatly improve in the coming days.

So erm, when is Africa going to get this drug?

Man kills his wife just a day after she gave birth to twins

A woman identified as Titilayo Kola was strangulated to death on Saturday allegedly by her husband a day after she was delivered of twins, The Nation reports

Sources revealed that the incident took place at the couple’s apartment at No 23, Temidire Street, Ajowa area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Findings further revealed that the deceased’s husband, one Mr. Kola, popularly known in as Melomelo (how many, how many), had escaped with the twins even as he was reported to have slept in the same room with his late wife, their new twins and other four children the night before the incident. Continue…

Narrating the incident to journalists, the landlady of the deceased, who simply identified herself as Mama Aluko, said, “Titilayo was delivered of a set of twins at midnight on August 7. I was with her to help with the children and other things. Her husband, who has not been living with her for some time now, also came around, while her mum too was also around.

“Around 8:30 in the evening, her mother told me she would be going for night vigil in her church. So, it was her husband, herself and their new twins that I left before I went to bed that night. “This morning (August 9), I woke up planning whether to prepare Semovita or fufu for Titilayo. It was around that time somebody came to inform me that they couldn’t wake Titilayo up and that her husband and the twins had disappeared.”

Asked about other family members of the couple, the landlady said she didn’t know much about them, adding that Kola (the husband) came to rent the apartment about a year earlier, but, however, stopped living with his wife a few months after they moved into the apartment.

Confirming the development, the Ekiti State’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Victor Babayemi, said: “It is a case of homicide and child stealing. The deceased was found dead on the bed in quite a suspicious circumstance, and the prime suspect is the husband of the woman who we haven’t seen. “So, we have a case of homicide and child stealing on our hands and we have commenced investigation.”

Ghana Records First Case of Ebola

Ghana may now have recorded her first Ebola case. Reports say a Burkinabe man, who had fever and bled from his nose and ears was rushed to Bawku Presby Hospital in the Upper East Region from Burkina Faso Friday afternoon.

The man had come down with a fever while in neighbouring Burkina Faso and was taken to a hospital for treatment in that country but saw no improvement in his condition. His relatives then decided to transport him across the common border between Burkina Faso and Ghana’s Upper East region, for proper care. But he died on the way.

The Medical Director at the hospital, Dr. Joseph Yaw Manu, confirmed to StarrFMonline.com that the man had died at the time he was brought in, saying:

What scared me most as a medical doctor is that he was bleeding from his ears and nose– symptoms of Ebola.”

On Dr Manu’s orders, blood samples from the deceased have been taken to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana for testing. If positive, this would be Ghana’s first confirmed case of the virus, which has killed at least 961 people in the West African sub-region out of 1,779 total cases. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are among the hardest hit countries.

The dead man's body has been taken back to a town called Sankanduri in Burkina Faso for burial, local Reporter Musah Lansa told StarrFMonline.com.

Jonathan congratulates Aregbesola on re-election as Osun Governor

President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State on his victory in Saturday’s governorship election.

Mr. Jonathan in a statement issued by the Presidency on Sunday commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and national security agencies for ensuring that the elections were free, fair, credible and peaceful in keeping with the avowed commitment of his administration.

He also applauded the people of Osun State, who he said came out en-masse on Saturday in all the local government areas of the state, to peacefully and freely exercise their democratic right.

According to the President, the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the elections had fully reaffirmed his administration’s determination to positively reform Nigeria’s electoral processes.

”The outcome of the election has also given the lie to the false, unfair and uncharitable allegations that measures put in place by the federal government for the Ekiti and Osun State elections were partisan and designed to achieve a favourable outcome for his party”, the President noted.

As Governor Aregbesola prepares to begin a second term in office, President Jonathan said he looks forward to continuing to work with him and other state governors to further improve the living conditions of Nigerians in Osun and other states of the country.

Boko Haram: Soldiers’ wives, children protest over GOC’s directives to block entrance to Giwa Barracks

Angry wives of some Nigerian soldiers blocked entrance to the Giwa Barracks, at the 7 Division, in Maiduguri, owing not to allow their husbands proceed to Bama as directed by the GOC, General Mohammed Ibrahim.

The enraged women got wind that their husbands had been directed to proceed to Bama, about 70km from Maiduguri, the capital of the troubled northeastern state of Borno.

On sighting the soldiers, who were assembling their weapons, the women came out in their numbers, insisting that their husbands would not abandon them in the barracks to be killed by Boko Haram, the way some of their friends were killed early this year.

The women, who were said to have remained at the gate till 5pm local time, refused all entreaties by Senior military officials.

They vowed to sleep in the place until the General Officer Commanding the 7th division reversed his directive.

A reliable military source said that the commander of the barracks had already relocated to Bama and was waiting for his boys, who should have joined him since morning for an operation but they could not because of the barricade.

“They blocked the road, all our weapons are now locked up inside and in case of emergency, we do not have weapons to defend ourselves. The women are equally not armed but are very angry sitting down there with their children.

“They are saying that they will not be left alone without any soldier to protect them during this trying time, considering the fact that almost two thousand people lost their lives outside and within the barracks when the insurgents paid their last visit this year.

“They are not ignorant of what is going on. They live in the barracks with their husbands and are aware that there are over 40 of the insurgents locked up inside the dungeons of that barracks.

“Living them alone is clear suicide and there is no guarantee that they will not be attacked by the insurgents, who are always bent on releasing their own regardless of where they are kept.

“You are aware of the fact that they tried releasing their people from the same Giwa Barracks this year; it is by the grace of God that some of us are alive now”.

He added that “Some of us think the decision to move the soldiers is a risk to the women and even the civilians in the city, who these soldiers are meant to protect.

“This decision is due purely out of corruption, because money is involved in their movement. If it is not corruption, why would they take such a decision when they know that the soldiers here are protecting the city”.

Meanwhile, military presence was increased on Sunday in the streets of Maiduguri, especially around Post Office, Monday Market, Barga Road, Circular road and GRA areas of the town.

Nigerian Nurse Dies of Ebola

A Nigerian nurse who treated a man with Ebola is now dead and five others are sick with one of the world's most virulent diseases, authorities said Wednesday as the death toll rose to at least 932 people in four West African countries. The death of the unidentified nurse marks the second Ebola death in Nigeria, and this worries health experts as it is the Africa's most populous country and Lagos, where the deaths occurred, one of its biggest cities.

The growing number of cases in Lagos, a mega city of some 21 million people, comes as authorities acknowledge they did not treat Patrick Sawyer as an Ebola patient and isolate him for the first 24 hours after his arrival in Nigeria last month. Sawyer, a 40-year-old American of Liberian descent with a wife and three young daughters in Minnesota, was traveling on a business flight to Nigeria when he fell ill.

Ebola: Liberians dump corpses of victims in streets

The Liiberian Government confirmed on Wednesday that relatives of Ebola victims defied quarantine order and are dumping corpses of Ebola victims in the streets of Monrovia.

This is happening as government struggles to enforce tough measures to curb further spread of the virus that has killed 887 people.

Lewis Brown, Information Minister said in Monrovia that relatives of Ebola victims were dragging bodies onto the dirt streets rather than face quarantine.

He said some people may be alarmed by regulations imposing the decontamination of victims’ homes and the tracking of their friends and relatives.

“They are therefore removing the bodies from their homes and are putting them out in the streets, and thereby exposing themselves to the risk of being contaminated.

“We’re asking people to please leave the bodies in their homes and we’ll pick them up’’, he added.

Brown said authorities had begun cremating bodies on Sunday, after local communities opposed burials in their neighbourhoods.

He said government carried out 12 cremations on Monday.

Brown said the troops deployed to the border region of Lofa County on Monday night had started isolating infected communities.

“We hope it will not require excessive force, but we have to do whatever we can to restrict the movement of people out of affected areas”, he said.

Finance Minister Amara Konneh said the country’s growth forecast for the year was no longer looking realistic as a result of the outbreak.

British Airways said it was suspending flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone until the end of the month due to public health concerns.

APC members are Boko Haramites and barbarians – Fani-Kayode

Nigeria’s former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani Kayode has continued to accuse the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the deadly sect, Boko Haram.

In a fresh allegation made public today via his twitter page, , FFK wrote; “The APC is the political wing of Boko Haram and Boko Haram is the military wing of the APC, Say NO to the Haramite murderers and barbarians.”

This is not the first time the former Minister would be accusing the opposition party, APC of fueling violence in the country.

Recently in Osogbo, Osun state, Kayode had further reiterated his conviction that the growing insecurity in north and other parts of the country was the brain-child of the APC, saying the sect was a political wing of the party.

“The APC in the North is the political wing of Boko Haram in the northern part of Nigeria. This, I have said before and no one amongst them was bold enough to challenge me. I will continue to say it again and again. The northern elements in the APC have to explain to all Nigerians why some of their leaders in the North support, encourage and defend Boko Haram members.” FFK said.

He further asserted that the silence of the party was a way of accepting the obvious. He said; “No member of the APC has been bold enough to controvert what I said about their relationship with the Boko Haram members in the North. I stand to be challenged if any of them has a contrary view.”

I slaughtered only five people – Boko Haram butcher

On Wednesday 6th August, 2014, Zakari was paraded before journalists at a police facility in Abuja. while responding to questions, he said it takes him two minutes to slay his victim that is given death sentence.

The 30-year-old suspect, who spoke to journalists through an interpreter (he spoke in Kanuri), said he joined Boko Haram in 2012 and had been working with the sect until his arrest on July,12 by the police, along Darazo-Basrika Road, Bauchi while fleeing from Balmo Forest.

Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer said the police authorities decided to parade the suspect to discredit news of his alleged escape. FacebookTwitterEmailMore

“Associate Airline has refused to compensate me” – Hostess on ill-fated plane carrying late Agagu

Oluwatoyin Samson, one of the hostesses and a survivor of the ill-fated Associated Airlines plane that crashed in Lagos State with the remains of former Minister of Aviation, Chief Olusegun Agagu, has told the media her ordeal in the hands of the management of the airline.

On 3rd October 2013, Akure bound Associated Aviation Flight 361, operated by an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia, crashed on take off from Murtala Muhammed Airport.

Fifteen of the 20 people on board were killed..

The aircraft was on a charter flight taking the body of the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu for burial.

Oluwatoyin, who joined the company in 2000, was one of the people at the second Engr. Zakariya Haruna memorial lecture held in Lagos to recount her experience.

Dressed in a red gown and limping, due to injury she sustained from the crash, the middle-aged woman said the carrier omitted her name when they started paying the 30 per cent insurance to the families of the deceased and injured.

Oluwatoyin stated that she called the airline spokesman, Alex Emode, who advised her to get a lawyer because she granted an interview to the Accident Investigation Bureau upon her return.

“I told AIB nothing but the truth about the crash”, she said, adding that “In fairness to the crew and passengers that died, I don’t need to hide anything from AIB.

“My personal effect, recovered from the wreckage, has not been given back to me and it has been returned to Associated Airline by AIB”.

She disclosed that her lawyer wrote a letter to the company on her plight, adding that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, was copied.

“To my surprise, Mr. Alex Emode told my lawyer on phone that I’m not a staff of Associated Aviation. I now asked him to tell me what I was doing onboard if I was not a staff of the airline”, she said. “Is it a crime to survive an air crash? If I had died in the crash, would they have told my family that I am not their staff?”

Oluwatoyin said that Emode told a journalist that she went on shopping spree in South Africa.

“I was furious and asked him if he gave me any money for the shopping in South Africa. All the money that was given to me by my family members and good Nigerians while I was on my hospital bed, were given to Mr. Alex in South Africa when he said that we have to cater for the accommodation and feeding of any family member accompanying us to South Africa.

“So, where will I get money to go on shopping spree as he claimed? Different false accusations because they don’t want to compensate me.

“He said that according to Geneva law, an obsolete law, I’m not going to be compensated because I am alive and I did not suffer any loss or permanent injury, that I will only be compensated on compassionate ground, if possible”.

She recalled, amid tears, the counsel by her doctor to stop hectic activities, adding that she can no longer function as a cabin crew because of her low physical and mental strength.

“My mobility is slow. I cannot stand for a long time, which disqualifies me for yearly medical/ditching/ evacuation exercise before my crew licence can be renewed.

“The indelible scars, burns behind my right arm are scary to behold. The psychological trauma I’m suffering now is as a result of the crash. I now have fear of aircraft during take-off.

“All these were not happening to me before the crash. I was very active. I walked straight. I do not limp, neither were I afraid of flight.

“The incident happened over nine months ago and the company has not done anything to take care of me. They neglected and humiliated me”, she cried.

US dispatches 50 health workers to fight Ebola in Africa[PHOTOS]

The US has announced plans to send at least 50 public health experts to West Africa to help fight the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola.

A senior US health official, according to BBC, said the outbreak was out of control but insisted it could be stopped.

Ebola has claimed 728 lives in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone this year. The current mortality rate is about 55%.

Meanwhile, an American doctor infected with the virus is improving in hospital after returning to the US from Liberia.

Dr Kent Brantly arrived at a military base in Georgia on Saturday before being driven to Emory University Hospital.

Another infected American, aid worker Nancy Writebol, is expected to arrive in the US soon.

The virus spreads through human contact with a sufferer’s bodily fluids.

Initial flu-like symptoms can lead to external haemorrhaging from areas like eyes and gums, and internal bleeding which can lead to organ failure.

‘Scary’ disease Dr Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced the new US measures in an interview with ABC’s This Week.

“We do know how to stop Ebola. It’s old-fashioned plain and simple public health: find the patients, make sure they get treated, find their contacts, track them, educate people, do infection control in hospitals.”

The experts would arrive in West Africa within 30 days to fight what he called the “scary” disease.

He rejected fears that this would put more US citizens in harms way.

“The single most important thing we can do to protect Americans is to stop this disease at the source in Africa” he said.

Special plane The plane carrying Dr Brantly was outfitted with a special portable tent designed for transporting patients with highly infectious diseases.

The same aircraft is due to bring missionary Nancy Writebol from West Africa.

The hospital facility which will treat both patients is one of four in the US able to handle Ebola patients.

US officials say they are confident the patients can be treated without putting the public in any danger.

The National Institutes of Health in the US has said it will begin testing a possible Ebola vaccine in September.

WHO says Ebola is spreading fast, announces $100m grant for affected countries[PHOTOS]

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is spreading faster than efforts to control it, the World Health Organization head, Dr. Margaret Chan, has said.

She told a summit of regional leaders, including the worst-affected countries – Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone – that failure to contain it could be “catastrophic” in terms of lives lost.

Chan, however, added that the virus outbreak, the world’s deadliest and largest in terms of geographical areas, could be stopped if well managed.

The WHO head used the occasion to announce the launching of a new $100 million (N17billion)Ebola response plan.

“This meeting must mark a turning point in the outbreak response”, Dr. Chan said at the summit in Guinea’s capital, Conakry.

“Cases are occurring in rural areas which are difficult to access, but also in densely populated capital cities”.

Ebola, a disease that has killed over 700 persons, spreads by contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs – or contaminated environments.

Initial flu-like symptoms can lead to external haemorrhaging from areas like eyes and gums, and internal bleeding which can lead to organ failure.

Ebola kills up to 90% of those infected, with patients having a better chance of survival if they receive early treatment.

2015 presidency: Tambuwal, Ihedioha posters surface in Abuja

Posters bearing the images of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and his Deputy, Emeka Ihedioha as President and Vice Presidential aspirants were Saturday seen in most major streets of Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

Although, both men are members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the posters carry the logo of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

Reacting to the development via a statement, media aide to Tambuwal, Imam Imam, said the Speaker had nothing to do with the posters.

He further advised those behind it to respect the warning on political campaigns by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

“While we thank them for deeming us fit for elective office in the country, let it be known that since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not given the go-ahead for those interested in elective positions to start mobilisation, it is inappropriate for any person or group to print campaign posters and have them placed in strategic areas all over the country,” said Imam.

“Laws of the Federation are meant to be obeyed by the high and mighty. The Honourable Speaker will make known the direction he will take with regards to his political future at the appropriate time,” the statement added.

Group slams Governor Elechi over comment on kidnapped lawmaker

A civil rights group, Future Hope Initiative, (FHI) has expressed dismay over Governor Martin Elechi’s reaction to the crisis in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

The group said the governor’s failure to condemn the abduction and attempted murder of the majority leader of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Sam Nwali, “is a grave omission pregnant with a lot of hidden meanings”.

Governor Elechi had in a press conference condemned an advertorial published in one of the national dailies on Tuesday 29th July, stressing that the publication “was a calculated attempt by the sponsors to ram his head against the Lawmakers and his in-laws in Izzi clan over the impeachment of the embattled Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Chukwuma Nwazunku”.

The Ebonyi Chief Executive also informed the journalists that efforts were still on to reconcile all the House members to ensure peace and stability across the state adding that since the impeachment of the former Speaker, people have reacted differently; in some cases reaction bordered on peace and security.

But in a statement made available to newsmen, FHI described the governor’s position as an attempt to play the ostrich over the abduction and attempted assassination of Mr. Nwali pointing out that a lot of people in Ebonyi believe that the sponsors of the advertisement were behind the kidnap of the majority leader.

In the statement signed by Ezekiel Nkwuda and Dr. Ikpa Agwu, Executive Director and Publicity Secretary respectively; the rights group noted that by avoiding any mention of the criminal abduction and mayhem meted on the majority leader, the governor “seems to weaken the gravity of the crime and its implications on peace and security in Ebonyi State”.

Part of the statement read: “We listened to the press conference addressed by Ebonyi State Governor Chief Martin Elechi on the attempt by some people to use a sponsored advertorial in a national daily to dismiss the recent impeachment of the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Chukwuma Nwazunku, as an attempt to impeach Governor Elechi.

“The Governor succeeded in his clever use of words to show the negative intentions of the sponsors of the advertorial by stressing that ‘their intention is evil and all it is about is condemnable’. But we are pained that the governor did not spare a word or sentence to draw attention to the crime of abduction and attempted assassination on the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Mr. Sam Nwali”.

FHI noted that by failing to make any comment on the abduction of Nwali after he personally visited the victim at the state headquarters of the Department of State Security Services, the Governor has left the impression in the minds of citizens that he sanctioned the attack as being claimed by the suspects.

“We are compelled to point out the worrying implications of this seemingly deliberate oversight especially in the light of the approaching elections in the country. The situation becomes very disturbing when the suspects are left to walk the streets freely after just three hours of police interrogation”, the statement added.

The group, therefore, called on the new Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, to match his vow to fight criminals to a standstill by ordering “fresh investigations into the kidnap of Ebonyi majority leader and the attempts to cover up the crime on the pretext of political competition”.

Guber ticket: Adamawa PDP rejects Ribadu

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Adamawa State, Chief Joel Madaki, has dismissed claims that the party was interested in having Nuhu Ribadu as its governorship candidate in the state.

There have been several reports in the media, linking Ribadu to the governorship ticket of the PDP.

However, in a clarification, Madaki said his party is not interested in wooing or begging anyone to fly its flag in the election to replace impeached Governor Murtala Nyako.

The PDP, according to him, has many qualified people in its ranks to win the governorship poll. As Madaki, addressed party’s stakeholders at Government House, Yola on Friday, Acting Governor Umaru Fintiri vowed to recover every kobo paid by the Nyako Administration for contracts not executed.

While dismissing reports that the PDP was shopping for a governorship candidate, the party chairman said PDP’s door is open to all indigenes of the state interested in joining it.

He said: “PDP is a fully loaded party with experienced politicians who have held many laudable national positions in different capacities and who have been tried and tested to occupy any office hierarchy in the country.

“Adamawa State PDP is blessed with an array of qualified politicians; there is no need to bring somebody from outside the party to run on its ticket for the 2015 race.

“We are not wooing or begging anyone to be our governorship candidate. Are there no qualified candidates among all of you sitting here? It is an insult to all of us to say that we are wooing any person to be PDP governorship candidate.

“I want to make it clear that our doors are open for people to come in. We will give those coming equal treatment and a sense of belonging”.

He commended the acting governor and members of the state assembly for restoring what he described as “PDP’s stolen mandate” by removing former governor, Murtala Nyako.

Niger East bye-election: APC has already accepted defeat – PDP boasts

The war of words between the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, has continued with the PDP boasting that its rival, has already conceded defeat even before the election.

The bye-election, which is slated for August 30, has continued to produce verbal altercations between the two major political parties.

In its latest offensive, the PDP described threats by the APC to boycott the senatorial bye-election over “trumped up allegations,” as clear manifestation that the party is “already dead on arrival”.

In a quick reaction against the opposition party, the PDP deputy chairman, Barr. Tanko Beji, described the actions of the opposition as “defeatist tendencies deployed by the APC to cover its shame.”

Beji described the allegations by the APC as unsubstantiated, and called on the party to put its house in order in preparation for the by-election that was postponed to August 30, instead of August 16, as earlier agreed during the meeting at the instance of INEC in the state.

The APC had accused the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo of romancing with the PDP-led government in Niger State. In a statement signed by the state publicity secretary of the APC, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, the party maintained that the REC was not neutral and could not a conduct free and fair election.

Apart from his closeness with the PDP-led government in the state, the APC also claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was a card-carrying member of the ruling party and had contested gubernatorial the election in Kogi State.

“Your vote is your power” – Anambra Government tells eligible voters ahead of re-validation

The Anambra Government has called on eligible voters in the state to turn out en-mass and participate in the forth-coming permanent voter’s card distribution and revalidation exercise.

The Special Adviser to the state governor on political matters, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike, made the call at Nibo near Awka during a stakeholders meeting involving Presidents-General of communities on Sunday.

Uzodike said that it was important for the state to participate massively in the exercise as its outcome would determine what the state would benefit from the Federal Government.

According to him, about 1.8 million voters were registered in the state previously out of which about 1.3 participated in the previous elections.

“This is the time for the people of the state to actualize their dreams of having the power to vote people of their choice.

“Let us ensure that all those whose names are in the voters’ register collect their permanent voters’ card, while those who have attained 18 years or did not register in the past should do so now”, he appealed.

Uzodike further said that the voter exercise would be used for delineation of constituencies in the state.

The special adviser charged the presidents-general to work with their village heads, councilors and other stakeholders to actualize the success of the exercise.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced that distribution of permanent voters’ card would take place from August 15 to August 17.

The commission also announced that the continuous voters’ registration exercise would hold between August 20 to August 25.

God’s intervention saved Nigeria” – Kwankwaso speaks on attacks to Buhari, Sheikh Dahiru

Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has called on the federal government to come up with a more sustainable and reliable way of dealing with insurgency in the country.

Kwankwaso, who spoke to journalists in his office on Saturday, insisted that the approach to solving the problem must be sustainable and reliable.

He said: “Yesterday, we watched an event where they were collecting billions for the victims. Yes, it is good to collect every naira and dollar for the victims. But what we are saying here is, we have to come up with a more sustainable way of handling the issue of North-East and other parts of this country.

“This issue of begging people to give money, especially with our situation now, I don’t think that would help in the long run. What is going to help is for government to tackle it and accept the reality that there is correlation between illiteracy, poverty and unemployment on one hand, and of course, violence, and insurgency and so on.

“That is what they don’t want to accept, and that is the reality. Anywhere in the world, everybody knows it, everybody told them, but unfortunately, they don’t want to accept for reasons best known to them. I personally believe that unless the issue of North East and far North is tackled, unless you do something about North East, you will continue to, unfortunately and regrettably, have some of these crises”.

Kwankwaso also challenged the newly appointed Inspector General of Police to promote an organisation that is out to serve all.

“The police should be friends with all of us; the police should protect us; the police should be neutral during election, because as long as the police are divided along lines of political parties, regions or religions, there would be crisis”, he added.

Reacting to the last week attack on the convoys of Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (Rtd) and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, by suspected members the Boko Haram, the governor said the development offered a huge lesson for President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to him, Nigeria was very lucky that the General and the Islamic cleric survived the attack.

He said, “Only God knows what would have happened in this country if any one of them, worst, two of them, lost their lives on that day this incident happened”.

Continuing, the governor said nobody can run any country with luck. “You can win election by luck, but you cannot run any serious administration with luck. Luck has its limitations, you cannot be lucky all the time”.

Kwankwaso also lamented the recent bombings in Kano, which were believed to have been carried out by female attackers.

“As long as we are into this issue of insurgency and other criminal activities, we would continue to see all sorts of styles, all sorts of surprises.

“It is sad that we have to go through these. These are things that could have been handled better over the years. Unfortunately, the graph is rising and I think this is not good for any leadership”, he stated.
